Belongs to the family Rosaceae , genus Prunus (like almond, peach, plum , appricot) , a subgenus Cerasus . The natural area of distribution covers most of Europe and southwest Asia .

Cherries are grown in modern plantations and its fruits are used for making : juices , jams , compotes, sweet cherries , or frozen stored for preparation of various desserts (cream, syrup , ice cream ... ) . In addition to real cherry brandy ( cherry ) .

In southeastern Serbia county of Nišavski, Oblačina surrounding villages in the municipality where is grown special varieties of sour cherry called Oblačinska.
